Garlic Podi|Poondu Idly Podi Recipe:

Idly podi/Gun Powder is an unbeatable combo with idly and dosa. It is the most common dish which can be found in all South Indian Households as it is easy and quick. There are several variations which can be made to the recipe and it differs from family to family. I have already posted a version without garlic with sesame seeds which amma usually makes and the below Garlic Podi|Poondu Idly Podi Recipe is with garlic and without sesame seeds.

  • Red Chilly-1/4 kg
  • Black Urad Dal(Split)-300 gms
  • Garlic-50 gms
  • Salt-To taste
  • Oil-Few drops

Procedure:

1. Measure and keep all the ingredients ready.

2. In a wide bottomed pan, add a drop of oil and saute the red chillies(stem to be removed) until it changes colour.

3. Take them and keep aside. Let it cool.

4. Similarly, saute urad dhal and allow it to cool.

5. Next, add a drop of oil and add garlic pods.

6. Cool them and peel the skin.

7. Once everything comes to room temperature, grind into a semi coarse/smooth powder in a grinder.

8. Store in an airtight container after it comes to room temperature

Please wait till everything is completely cooled down.

You can store and use for 3 months.

Podi+Gingelly Oil is an yummy combo with Idly/Dosa.

You can also grind into a smooth powder if you wish.

Store in an airtight container and use a dry spoon every time.

Adjust Chilly quantity as per taste.

The colour and taste depending on the variant of chilly used.
