Roasted Makhana Recipe For Toddlers & Kids with nutritional benefits & recipe- Roasted makhana seeds recipe is similar to our popular snack popcorns. We started munching on them when we found them very common in all dry fruit shops of Cochin. Researching more enabled me to explore the health benefits and our son started loving it too. But I am drafting the recipe only after 3 years.

What is Lotus Seed/Phool Makhana?

Initially, I didn’t give a great thought about which part of Lotus was this. But as we moved to North India I had glanced people cooking lotus stems and as I explored more the lotus seed, I came to know it is a part of the flower and cultivation and harvest requires high skills and more time.

Nutritional Benefits:

Phool Makhana is rich in protein and is an excellent source of Omega 3 and 6 . This is very ideal for vegetarians who run hunting for protein-rich foods(Almost 27% of daily requirement). They are said to be superior to almonds, walnuts in dry fruit group and better than coconut in nut groups in terms of nutrition.

Lotus seeds are free from gluten and are excellent sources of folates and minerals like manganese, potassium, calcium, iron, zinc. It has a lot of Vitamin B6 group components.

This has always been highlighted as a weight loss food but the truth is it keeps people full and their craving is stopped. It can be used during weight loss but lotus seeds will not aid in weight loss. So offering this as a healthy snack to babies, toddlers and kids is highly recommended but only in moderation.

How often can i offer my baby makhana?

Moderation is the key. Weekly once for little ones and weekly twice for adults would be my recommendation for those of you who are not used them.

Ingredients:

  • Lotus Seeds/Phool Makhana-2.5 cups
  • Oil-1/2 tbsp
  • Salt-To taste
  • Pepper powder-1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp

Procedure:

1. Heat a pan.

2. Add the lotus seeds and dry roast for 3 minutes in low flame.

3. Remove them from flame.

4. Add oil to the pan and turmeric powder, salt and pepper.

5. Mix them well and toss it with the makhana seeds.

6. Pepper roasted makhana recipe is done.

P.S:

Store it in an airtight container.

Adjust species as per your taste.

The entire process must be done in low flame.

I used gingelly oil. You can use ghee too.

I try different flavours like chilly powder,garam masala, plain ghee roasted, chaat masala, sambar masala

Opt for organic lotus seeds.

Ensure that there are no worms.

Raw seeds have a longer shelf life as mentioned in the packs.

This roasted makhana can be used for a month.

Skip the salt for babies below six months.
