Moong dhal chilla

MOONG DHAL CHILLA|UTHAPPAM|PAN CAKE

MOONG DHAL CHILLA

Moong dhal is an excellent source of protein and it is comparatively less gastric in nature. This is the reason it becomes one of the first foods for babies. Cooking moong dhal is so easy and quick. making pesarattu with green gram is a very common menu in my cooking and I tried uthappam as I wanted to make a veg version of the omelette.

Most recipes used besan. I was little hesitant to make a try with besan/gram dhal flour hence I made it with moong dhal. I tried making crispy dosa with these ingredients. You can try it too for your little one. Check recipe here.

avocado puree

Avocado puree | Butter fruit puree

Avocado-This fruit is now very commonly found everywhere though it is mainly cultivated in the U.S.A. When I was hunting on the health benefits of this fruit, few commented that avocado is absolutely nutritious but since most of them are being imported from foreign countries they might have been loaded with preservatives. Hence I have always given a second thought to include this fruit in my baby meal and in my blog. There can a solution to this, when I visited Kodai recently. I came to know that butter fruit is also like avocado and it is cultivated in our own lands and also there are few Indian land areas which cultivate Avocado. I was happy hearing this. The shop keepers said that butter fruit and avocado are same and I too found the same from few resources. When I first tasted it,I literally cursed it for the bland taste. Any baby will not accept such a food. I am always against adding sweetner to fruits, but this fruit definitely  needs some additional ingredient. I am writing in detail about how to choose avacado, how to know the right stage of ripened avocado, health benefits and avocado for babies. Hope you find it beneficial. I have used butter fruit in the below recipe. Do let me know if butter fruit and avocado are not the same fruit.

Ingredients:

Avacado/Butter fruit- 1

Palm Sugar-As per taste

          or

Banana-1/2

avocado puree

4.Add to a blender along with palm sugar/banana and give a quick run.

5.Serve immediately.

butter fruit puree

P.S:

I used a spoon to scoop the pulp out.

If your baby is above 7 months, just mash the pulp with your fingers and offer. I shall soon post recipe of butter fruit smoothie for elder babies.

Always have a word with your doctor before introducing any new food.

Do consider your family history of allergies.

Always sterlise bowls and spoons you use for baby.

Use only ripe avocado/butter fruit. Do taste before feeding baby.

Introduce banana in prior if you are using banana in this recipe.

AVOCADO FOR BABIES:

Avocado/Butter fruit is an excellent first food for babies because of two reasons according to me. There are extremely soft and mushy and loaded with rich nutrients. it has good fat which helps in baby’s brain development and physical development. This fat is monosaturated and it is highly essential fat(rich in Omega 3 fatty acids) which helps in lowering LDL. Please disregard if someone says avocado has fat,so please avoid for babies. These are essential; good fats  and they are a must. You need not cook avocado.Avocado can be given after 6 months in the form of purees. From seventh months offer them mashed and from eighth month offer them as pieces. Avocado is associated with latex allergy.Hence do consider family history of allergies.

HOW TO CHOOSE AVOCADO?

The domestic avocado or butter fruit is seasonal and it is available between June to September, whereas imported varieties are available round the clock.  The butter fruit is slight creamy yellow in colour and avocado is green or brown in colour. You have choose a fruit which yields to a slight thump. It should be neither  too soft  nor too hard. Choose avocadoes with unblemished skin and that are not so shiny. The colour varies depending on the origin. I happened to come across this below image which would help in the right stage of avocado. Hope this helps.Image source-elenaselivan.com

How to choose avocadoHEALTH BENEFITS:

Avocado is a rich source of Vitamin C,A,E,K,B-6,niacin,thiamin and and minerals like iron, potassium, magnesium, calcium. This aids in over all development of baby.

As stated earlier they have plenty of unsaturated fats which help in brain growth and vision development.

it is easy to digest and helps in curing digestive tract infections.

It helps in healing wounds faster, controls inflammation and enhances skin health.

It is also rich folate and helps as an anti depressant.

Avocados have more potassium when compared to bananas and contain 4 times higher fiber than apple.

Butter fruits have a rich concentration of protein and essential amino acids than any other tropical fruit.

Carrot Bath

CARROT BATH|CARROT RICE

Carrot Bath or Carrot Baath or Carrot Rice:

When you are super bored of cooking and you still want to make your lunch nutritious you can go ahead with one pot meals. Here is one yummy, sweet and spicy version of one-pot meal and it doesn’t require much time for cooking. This can be an easy way to include veggies in your toddlers’ menu. They will love it because of the colours and taste of carrot. If your baby is weaned by BLW method I am sure you will get an empty bowl back. My aunt had made this when we visited them 2 months back and we were totally loving it.

Ingredients:

  • Carrot-1.5 cups
  • Basmati Rice-1 cup
  • Onion-1/2 cup(Sliced)
  • Capsicum-1/4 cup(sliced)
  • GGG paste-1 tbsp
  • Ghee-To cook
  • Coriander leaves-To garnish
  • Cashew nut-7
  • Salt-To taste

(GGG -Ginger Garlic Green chilly)

Carrot Bath

Procedure:

1. Wash and soak basmati rice for 20 minutes in lukewarm water.

2. Add 1.5 cups of water and pressure cook the rice or open cook the rice and strain excess water.

3. Fluff the rice with a fork and set it aside.

4. In a pan, add ghee and roast cashews and set them aside.

5. In the same pan, add sliced onions, capsicum, grated carrots and GGG paste and saute well

6. Keep tossing until onions turn golden brown.

7. Now add the rice and mix well.

8. Add salt to taste.

9. Garnish with coriander leaves and cashews.

10. A rich but simple to cook carrot bath awaits to tangle in your tongues 🙂

P.S:

This is very suitable for kids who love colours in their foods.

Take care to fluff the rice well with a fork and ensure they don’t stick together.

You can also replace carrot with beetroot.

You can use the normal rice instead of basmati rice too.

Ensure not to stir many times after step 7. Otherwise, the rice will turn mushy.

This is suitable for babies above 9 months of age. Avoid salt and replace basmati rice with usual rice if required.

You can serve with any raitha of your choice.

Adjust the spice level by adding or reducing the GGG paste.

You can also add other seasoning elements like aniseeds, cinnamon, bay leaf and clove.

apple beet root carrot puree

ABC Puree/Apple Beetroot Carrot Puree for babies

How did you like my ABC smoothie? I do make ABC juice,ABC soups often, hence gave a thought about ABC puree for babies. I shall soon post ABC juice and soups which I learnt from few friends. This is ideal for babies above 6 months after having tried apple, beet root and carrot individually. I am not for purees for babies. I feel babies can have mashed foods from 6 months at the worst by 8 months. And too many purees spoil them and they mix textures. This is the reason behind not having given many puree recipes in baby food although I found mommies too keen on puree recipes. ABC juice is a miracle drink and it recommended for cancer cure, heart diseases and perfect complexion. It supplements brain functioning and lung functioning. The combination of apple ,beet and carrot gives a long term health . The power of two vegetables and one fruit is like a super power. It gives you Vitamin A, B1, B2, B6,B3 C, E ,K, Folate, Niacin, Zinc, Copper, Magnesium, Potassium, Phosphorus, Iron, Calcium, Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium, Selenium, beta-carotene and Manganese. No storing of this combo.Consume immediately after making. I make it with raw fruit and veggies. But here I suggest you to steam vegetables as it is for 6 m baby.

Ingredients:

  • Apple-1
  • Beet root-1/2(medium sized)
  • Carrot-1(medium sized)

apple beet root carrot puree

Procedure:

1.Wash all well.

2.Peel the skin of beet and carrot.

3.Grate them and steam cook.

4.When you are about to add everything to blender peel apple and grate.

5.Just blend them together and serve

apple beet root carrot puree

P.S:

Always consult your pediatrician before trying any new food.

Prefer this for afternoon time.

You can also just mash these together and offer your baby if you don’t prefer blending baby food(I hardly use blender for my baby).

Consider family history of allergy.

Use sterilzed bowls for baby.

I recommend you to go for puree with steamed veggies for 6 months old, move to mashed (steamed veggies) for 7 months to 9 months ,move to just mixing grated and steamed ingredients for 10 months and above one year just give it raw. This is just a suggestion.

The quantity and ratio depends on your taste.

home made cerelac

Home made Instant Cerelac-Just mix with hot water

Home made Instant Cerelac:

With many commercial baby products facing many issues, most mothers now feel scary to opt for them. Many mothers have asked me for the recipe of home made cerelac which can be instantly mixed with water and used during travel. I had written to them the below procedure. This is the procedure my mother suggested me for travel and emergency alone.I thought to share the same in my blog too for future reference. using poha/beaten rice/aval is much safer than using rice for instant cerelac.Kindly pardon me for the images. I couldn’t capture each step. Do write to me in case of any queries.(MAIL-kitchenkathukutty@gmail.com). All home made baby food recipes are here.

Ingredients:

Rice/Poha(Aval/Beaten Rice)-1 cup

home made cerelac

Home made Instant Cerelac:

5.Once water is totally dry , add it to a pan.

Home made cerelac

6.Dry roast till aroma arises.(Slightly brown colour)

8. Add this to the blender/mixer .

9. Continue blending till it becomes a fine powder.

10.Sieve the flour well until no residue stays.

home made cerelac

How to prepare this?

  1. Just mix the required quantity of cerelac with hot water.
  2. Stir it well to get a thick paste without lumps.
  3. Cool it and feed your baby.

home made cerelac

P.S:

Any other ingredient add to this flour definitely needs cooking and it might need some other industrial pre processing to get instantly mixed with hot water.

I just used the rice which is generally used in cooking.

All porridges(based on rice) can be given for babies above 6 months. It is better to always give a semi solid(non pouring) consistency porridge to babies.

Have a word with your pediatrician before introducing new foods.

Sterlise the bowls used for cooking and feeding.

Always feed with a spoon and bowl rather than any bottles.

Kindly use this for emergency and travel purposes alone.

The water has to really hot, only then it mixes instantly.

Prefer poha/aval/beaten rice instead of rice in this recipe for safer side.

All other varieties of home made cerelac(needs to cooked)/porridges(Rice,wheat,ragi and various combinations) for babies are here in the below link.
