Maravalli Kilangu/Maravalli Kizhangu or kuchi kilangu or kappa kilangu is tapioca.It is one of the staples of Kerala and I have already posted the recipe of kappa puzhukku-A traditional dish of Kerala. We are not a huge fans of this vegetable but this recipe of Maravalli Kizhangu Adai was yummy .My sister in law shared this recipe last June and I had tried it thrice so far. The flavour of tapioca in this Maravalli Kizhangu Adai Recipe is so unique and it makes the adai so soft.The ingredients are more similar to the usual bottle gourd adai  but it is slightly on the spicy side.You can reduce the number of chilies to balance that as per your taste. Maravalli Kizhangu Adai Recipe


Makes 6-8

  • Idly Rice-1 cup
  • Tapioca-1 cup(chopped finely)
  • Red Chilly-2 or as per taste
  • Ginger-A small piece
  • Onion-1/2 cup(Chopped Fine)
  • Hing-A pinch
  • Salt-To taste
  • Oil-To drizzle
  • Water-1/2 cup

1.Measure all the ingredients and keep them ready.

  1. Soak rice overnight or 8 hours with red chilly after rinsing and washing well.

  1. In the morning or after 8 hours,drain the water.

4.Grind everything together except onion and oil.First add the chopped tapioca and ensure it is blended well and then add rice.

  1. Saute the chopped onions and add to the batter.

  2. Let the consistency be slightly thick.

  1. Heat a dosa pan and grease with some oil.

  2. Take a ladle of batter and spread it gently.

9.Drizzle with oil and cook it by closing in medium flame.

  1. Flip side and cook.

  1. Repeat the same for the remaining batter.

  2. Maravalli Kizhangu Adai is ready to be served with any chutney.

You can grate the tapioca for easy grinding.

You can skip adding onions if you wish.

Don’t skip adding ginger and hing.

If you can handle garlic taste please add it to while grinding.

Adjust chilly as per taste.

Take care while spreading the batter.

Maintain the flame between low-medium.

This is suitable for babies above 6 months.
