What is Poongar Rice?

We(India & TamilNadu ) had lakhs of rice varieties long ago of which we don’t even have a few 1000 variants now. Rice is great for your health if you choose the right rice variant, eat the right amount and live an active life. We have lost all our indigenous rice variants and moved to the polished white rice and have invited all lifestyle diseases to our doorstep. The best alternate is moving to millets and traditional rice variants as much as possible. Poongar is a traditional red rice variety from TamilNadu. The crop can withstand floods and also doesn’t need much water.

Health benefits of Poongar Rice:
  • Rich in iron, magnesium and zinc.
  • Called as women’s rice as it solves all hormonal issues.
  • Best suited for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.
  • The fermented porridge/starch water is rich in B12.
  • Strengthens the body and helps in curing celiac disease.
  • Best suited for diabetic people
  • Helps in lowering cholesterol and preventing heart diseases
  • Increase haemoglobin and boosts immunity.

Maybe, our generation wouldn’t have become victims of PCOS, infertility , diabetes if we hadn’t skipped using these rice variants. I am not a professional or expert. But the more I read about them I can very well relate to “Unave Marunthu/ Food is Medicine”

How to Cook Poongar Rice?

My sister in law made a sweet dumpling with this and it was heavenly in taste and extremely soft even after hours. That is how I got attracted to this variant. You can soak for 3-4 hours and make idly, dosa, kozhukkkatai, idiyappam and open cook like normal rice. The best and most recommended recipe from ancient times is porridge/kanji. P.S:

You can skip toor dhal, moong dhal and idly rice.

The softness depends on the urad dhal you use (Whole White).

The same batter can be used for dosa making too.

You can offer this to babies above 6 months skipping salt after eliminating allergies of individual ingredients and family history of allergies.

Always have a word with your doctor before starting a new food for your baby.
