Kaatuyaanam Idiyappam Recipe:

You would have already watched recipes of kaatuyaanam appam and kaatuyaanam dosa .Today morning I tried idiyappam/string hoppers in the traditional method we make at home. The Kaatuyanaam Idiyappam recipe is one of the best trials I have ever made and it is so filling and yummy.

What is Kaatuyanam Rice?

The rice variety is from TamilNadu and it is one of the traditional red rice variants. The name signifies two things – The crop grows so huge that an elephant can hide behind it and eating this rice gives your the strength of an elephant. Yaanam/Yaanai is an elephant in Tamil. The crop can grow in any climate and even in the driest conditions. It is blackish-red in colour. Naturally, this rice doesn’t need much maintenance during the growth period

This rice is rich calcium, magnesium and fibre, hence making it help in digestion and bone, teeth, hair growth.

With most highly polished rice, chances of obesity and diabetes are high with lifestyle disorders. Whereas this Kaatuyaanam is highly rich in calcium and not in carbohydrate.

It helps you fight against the knee, joint pains and helps in fighting arthritis.

The bran contains anthocyanins and is very rich in minerals and vitamins.

It has anti-ageing properties and helps you fight heart diseases.

Kaatuyaanam Idiyappam Recipe:

Serves 3-4


  • Kaatuyaanam Rice- 1.5 cups
  • Grated Coconut-1/2 cup
  • Water-1/2 cup
  • Salt-To taste
  • Ghee or Oil- To cook

Kaatuyaanam Idiyappam Recipe:


1.Wash and rinse the rice well. Soak it overnight.

2.After 8 hours or next day morning,drain the water and add the rice, grated coconut,1/2 cup water and salt to a mixer. Grind into a smooth paste.

  1. Add ghee/oil to thick bottomed vessel. Now add the ground paste to this kadai and stir it well.

  1. Keep stirring continuously till it becomes a non sticky thick mass. This might take close 10-12 minutes.

5.Remobe from the stove. make small balls and use an idiyappam press to make idiyappam.

  1. In a steamer , steam cook for ten minutes in low flame.

  1. Kaatuyaanam Idiyappam is ready. Serve with coconut milk. Repeat the same for remaining dough too.

You have to be careful in adding water to the batter.

Continuous stirring is very important.

You can use any type of red rice or traditional rice in the recipe.
